Sweet Tea, Cheerwine, and North Caroline

“Sometimes I grow weary from going all the time. I’d love to take a minute, let you ease my mind. I’d love to see my mama, maybe go for a drive, but I got to play the star in some little town again tonight. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do. It’s just another song about missing you… Oh, Carolina, keep calling me home.” –Eric Church

This past weekend I hit the road again and traveled to Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  I was so excited to get back on the road and into recruitment season, and this visit didn’t disappoint!  Boone, NC is such a pretty little town in the mountains – I fell in love as soon as I got there.  And the best part? Their school colors are black and gold – reminded me of home sweet home.  Perfect timing for such a visit J

The day I arrived, I went to dinner with the President and she took me to this mom and pop restaurant called “Proper.”  I cannot even begin to tell you how good that food was.  It was southern comfort food at its finest and definitely the best meal I have had on the road so far!  It was here that I had my first taste of Cheerwine! It's a cherry-soda type drink, no alcohol (don't worry, I asked!).

sweet tea in a mason jar and cheerwine. could this be more southern?

The next day we had a workshop in the morning where we finalized a lot of the logistical parts of recruitment the next day.  Then, the women had a break in the afternoon to go to the football game. I was lucky enough to be visiting App the same weekend Miss Kaitlyn was planning on coming back to her alma mater.  She let me tag along to the tailgate, took me shopping, and then took me to an awesome Boone restaurant.  I don’t even know the last time I saw a familiar face, so it was nice to meet up with her and have a really fun, low-key afternoon. Kaitlyn, keep me updated on those precious pups J

so many laughs that afternoon. Kaitlyn, thanks for being my friend

Later that night we had another workshop that, once again, reminded me why I love this job. Coming in for a very short visit, I can’t change the world. Visits like this (and really, all visits) are all about small victories.  That night, I felt like there were about 20 small victories. There are lots of ups and downs with this job, but that night, I definitely went to bed with a sense of accomplishment and was very proud of the chapter!

loved these Lilly letters!

The next morning I woke up and immediately turned on the news to watch the 9/11 specials since I would be busy the rest of the day with recruitment. As a 7th grader, I couldn’t really understand what was happening that day.  I honestly had to stop watching some of the footage as I was getting ready because it was such an emotional morning.  Once the parties and everything associated with the first round of recruitment was over for the day, I went back to my room and had a chance to watch some more of the footage.  As I was sitting in my room, by myself, at 1am, I really started to miss my family.  First thing the next morning, I called my mom and talked to her before work – best way to start off the day if you ask me!

I’m back in New Orleans for a few days before I hit the road again this weekend! And, it’s official, I’m heading home at the end of October!  I’ve already started a countdown.

I can.not.wait to be back home!

Lastly, happy birthday to my grandma J Love you and miss you all the time – can’t wait to visit you and gramps in Florida sometime this winter!
